We’ve all seen them on something like ninety percent of the websites out there. You know the ones that pop up begging for you to subscribe to their email list or the chat pop ups and lets not for get the modal cookie pop ups that really don’t give you a choice. Thankfully ublock eats a lot of these popups to make websites more usable. Today I ran into an instance that was particularly annoying.
It’s Friday so we did our normal thing and got our takeout from Joy’s Tavern. We’ve been enjoying their takeout food and drinks since spring. The food is always good and their sauce for the onion rings is just amazing! Today I got a burger for a change. I’ve been getting cheese steaks but I wanted something different today so I ended up with the burger. It has peppers and stuff on it and it’s really tasty.
We haven’t been able to go to the grocery store ourselves for a few weeks. Well we could have just ignored the quarantine like so many other people have done but instead tried to do the right thing. I am sure I’ve mentioned it before but I just loathe going into Giant. It brings out the worst rudeness in people. It’s like Mount Joy’s own mini Walmart. The old people were everywhere just blatantly invading my space.
Today has gone a bit like too many days since I had coronavirus but I wasn’t really feeling like doing a WOD or much of anything at all. Today is just one of those dark and rainy mid winter days. Started out with freezing rain this morning and now it’s just rain with the temperature in the low 30s. How great it would be to have a nice fireplace on days like this to relax in front of it and read my kindle or something.
Some time ago, I think over the summer sometime I stumbled upon something called swoveralls which are sweatpants overalls. Anyways I remembered them when I was thinking I should grab a smaller pair of sweatpants for myself. In the past month my weight has crashed about 8 pounds and it was mostly fat so basically everything I have now is too big to the point that it’s almost uncomfortable to wear.
I was grabbing another cup of coffee and as I always do when it’s starting to get light I walk over to the only window in the kitchen which happens to be east facing. Unfortunately it’s most a blocked view due the the neighbor’s house but still you can see the south east sky which is perfect for sunrise here in the deep of winter. Today’s sunrise was another exceptionally deep red one.
This week’s sandbag WOD was not really one that I was looking forward to in any way, shape or form. What it really comes down to is I thought it was a dumb one with dumb movements but I ended up deciding to give it a try. It was surprisingly not that bad for me considering two out of the 3 movements in it were movements I really have as close to zero interest in doing as possible.
It’s Christmas day now and due to my COVID we’re not supposed to be going anywhere. We weren’t comfortable with it to begin with but my test sort of took that right out of our hands. I never wanted to be a part of the risk others are taking with their poor choices. The other thing that it took away was our max out day that was to be today. I want to recover a bit more before going heavy.
Today being Christmas even Street Parking had programmed a twelve days of Christmas WOD. I originally wasn’t going to do it butt I knew Molly wanted to do it so I did the WOD with her. It was one of the longest WODs I’ve done really for multiple reasons. We did the dumbbell version of the WOD given it took up the least amount of space enabling us to workout together which is always fun!
After doing my lifting and first WOD today we kept hearing a loud fighter jet flying over. It’s not necessary uncommon to hear them flying low here but certainly not as common as it was growing up in Bensalem with Willow Grove nearby and Fort Dix and Dover being not all that far away either. We’d see all kinds of planes and formations at times and I can even remember seeing stealth fighters flying low in the 80s.
While I woke up feeling a little tired this morning from going to bed a little bit later and waking up a little bit earlier all in all I felt pretty good this morning. I felt like I had a lot of energy so I thought it would be a good day to stretch out my working out time. First up were the still light back squats and 195 pounds. I felt great doing them and needed very little rest between sets.
Today’s WOD didn’t look that interesting for me to do today. I want to do it eventually but just didn’t want to do that one on this day so I looked at other options. To start out the day I did a power WOD from a couple weeks ago that I have been wanting to do. At first I was waiting for my lifting belt to arrive because I wanted to try it out with the presses then I got sick so opted to put it on hold.
Continuing on my journey of recovering from the coronavirus I did my lifts today. I wasn’t sure how it would go considering the WOD I performed yesterday felt a lot tougher than it should have. I felt good today so I decided to do my lifts. I had thought that I might end allowing myself an extra day of rest between sessions for the time being but I woke up feeling refreshed, more so than I thought I might so I decided to continue getting into the swing of things.
I felt pretty good after my lifting yesterday and my first WOD back the day before so I decided to give the other week’s sandbag WOD a go today. It was shorter than the day’s programmed WOD and I thought it would be more manageable. The WOD was straight forward. It was Sandbag hang clean and presses and then thrusters and finally power clean and toss it over the bench. Five rounds of these movements.
I haven’t lifted since last Tuesday I think? The days have been a blur and i have to admit I still feel a bit shell shocked by all of this. I can’t think of any ways we could have realistically been any more cautious. It is what it is at this point though so the only way to go forward is heal and move on. I’ve been really nervous to attempt my lifts even though I have been feeling better for several days.
I haven’t had a fever since like Monday and the muscle aches are gone so I decided that today would be a good day to attempt a WOD. Hell it’s not like I am on a tight schedule to do anything if I burn out and have to sleep the rest of the day. The WOD was an AMRAP of 10 Sandbag push presses, 15 supine toe touches with the sandbag and 30 hop overs.
Last Wednesday I upped the intensity on a WOD and felt a bit wiped out over it but I didn’t think anything of it. By Thursday afternoon I had a fever. Living in an area where half the population thinks it’s just a hoax or only the flu it was inevitable but still I, well we, took every precaution we could feasibly take. We have not gone out to eat and have only brought take out home.
I just walked into the kitchen to get some more coffee when I noticed the red glow coming in the east facing window. Really it’s the only window but that’s not a big deal. Due to the neighbor’s house you can only see to the southeast. The horizon was this deep almost lava red or even the red color when metal starts glowing a bit from heat. The clouds above it were darker gray with some red or purple mixed in but the real show was the deep red glow nearer to the horizon today.
I have no idea why it popped into my mind this morning but I had the sudden urge to get a pork roll and cheese sandwich and eat it. I can’t really think of seeing that available around here but if I did get it then it was nothing to write home about. I used to get these often at either the Colonial Deli on the way to the community college or at the cafeteria there.
I have known since I was fairly young that you shouldn’t turn a fridge on after it’s been laying down since my parents bought from someone at my grandfather’s work that was moving. We took the old one we had in the kitchen down in the basement and put the new in the kitchen after they took it off the truck. It ran but never got cold. We learned from someone after that that you shouldn’t lay it down.
I was searching to see if there’s a method to disable the stupidly used and unnecessary fade in effect that so many pages seem to use these days. There’s nothing like waiting for the stupid fade ins when things can load pretty much instantly now. This is really noticeable with discourse based sites. Between that and the “infinite scroll” that they use it really makes things so much slower than they need to be.
One of the things I always wanted to do as an elementary school aged child is go to a real library. I would read anything that was even remotely interesting to me and I think I had read the stuff that interesting me several times that was available in the school’s small library. My dad worked very long hours and my mom didn’t drive so we never really got the chance to go to Bensalem Library.
With the whole COVID19 thing there have been less opportunities to deal with other people’s kids. I don’t mind kids at all but it’s a problem when they’re little assholes and there is no parenting to be found in any shape or form. They’ll grow up to be big assholes. Today we where at the grocery store standing in line minding our own business when out of the blue a cart slammed full force into me.
This morning I just happened to take notice of a business’s Facebook page that we used to be customers of. While we are no longer customers I have no desire to see them fail or anything like that. Covid is sure to be hurting them along with many other small businesses right now. I do glance at their posts once in a while and happened to click on the reviews section.
The other day I got a message through Facebook from a friend at the mountains daughter. It’s been over 20 years since I’ve been to 8 bees and that long since I’ve seen him or his daughter. We drank lots of beers together and we went to see Black Sabbath in the mid 90s. I rode my quad all over the place with him on this three wheeler. I called him after she gave me his phone number and we caught up a bit.
One thing I’ve noticed this year is there have been many people lighting off fireworks all summer long. You hear them every night. There have been lots of bigger ones. One of the things I find to be pretty strange when I moved up here is how few people actually set off fire works. It was rare to see them or here them and illegal ones just didn’t happen. Growing up in Andalusia there were always vans driving through the neighborhood selling them.
I don’t remember what we were talking about today but it clicked that it has been 3 months since I’ve chosen to watch anything on TV myself. My girlfriend hasn’t really turned on the television either. I think it was brought up because I wondered if and when their will be any new Saturday Night Live episodes. There was a show a few weeks ago I thought about wanting to see if it was available on YouTube TV but then when I went to search I drew a blank so I guess it wasn’t all that important to me.
Yesterday into this morning we’ve had dew points well into the mid 70s which aren’t that far off from the highest I’ve seen her which was pushing 80 during tropical systems in the summer. Just being constantly covered with sweat is one of the most annoying things to me. You can always add another layer in the winter to dress warmer but with heat and humidity you reach a point where there’s nothing you can do and this is one of those types of situations.
It’s weird how sometimes strange things become normal when you see them often enough. Growing up, you’d always see pairs of shoes hanging from the electric wires, particularly near the apartments. I always wondered why and how they got there. As kids we heard the normal stuff. The typical gang activity reasoning. There was also the racists reasoning which even then I thought was stupid. There was also the rumor that bullies took them or that someone who knew someone got killed and they threw their shoes up there.
They were on sale so we picked up to boxes of blueberries when we were at the store last week. I just now got around to eating them and unlike most times they were sweet and had an awesome blueberry flavor. It brought back good memories of being a kid or even an adult going to eight bees and playing in the woods. When they were ripe I’d spend lots of times eating blue berries straight off the blueberry bushes.
I haven’t gone into the grocery store in a few weeks but since it wasn’t busy last evening when we were there I went in instead of waiting in the car. The first thing I noticed is the stupid arrows on the floor were gone. The last time I was in they had the isles set up with arrows so they were supposed to be one way. It is one of those things that made sense on paper but not in reality.
I use Facebook and such as a brain drain sometimes and it’s been a great way to see what some people are up to that I grew up with. It really is frustrating and disappointing how many people just jump right on board with confirmation bias misinformation. The most ironic wave I’ve seen recently is people bitching about the lack of critical thinking while while spreading misinformation. I used to think tiny soundbites taken out of context on cable news were the worst thing for society but social media is even worse than that.
For some reason I happened up a website explaining how to enable white text on black background recently. This is something I was always disappointed that the kindle didn’t have and had always hoped they’d implement it someday. This would make reading so much easier and more enjoyable for me. Don’t get me wrong, I do love my kindle paper white already for the most part. The ability to set the font and font size to something that works for my poor visual acuity in itself is a game changer for me and most likely anyone else with a visual impairment.
I just heard the first truck go past for today which caught my attention because there typically is so much truck traffic through here. Normally the truck traffic here is pretty annoying but I always say there could be worse things since trucks me things are being made and people are working, buying and selling stuff. There’s also been a big reduction in normal car traffic. People figured out when a bridge was closed that they can use our street for through traffic to avoid red lights on main street.
It is one of those things that I’ve always been curious about. Why do people seem to star out letters when typing curse words. It’s just extremely odd to me. I you’re afraid of offending people I don’t see why anyone would find f*ck or sh*t and different that seeing fuck or shit. If you’re afraid of who might read it just don’t use the word. Don’t get me wrong I think everyone should use those words!
Interesting times we’re living in right now. Normal is gone for now. I think it’s definitely a smart and good call for the greater good of the population. Hopefully there’s not too much ugliness with greed and overboard capitalism. The other thing is hopefully a plan comes together to help individuals and especially small business owners. The mega corporations ought to be able to weather it. The Waltons and such don’t need a bailout.
I’m kinda surprised and pretty disappointed that people are overreacting to the whole coronavirus thing here. It is a real thing and could be a problem and all that stuff but it’s certainly not productive nor does it even make any sense at all to buy all the shit at the grocery store. There will be no shortage of shit paper other than the self feeding paranoia of people seeing the empty shelves.
We’ve all come across the stupid endless scrolling where when you hit the bottom of the screen it loads more entries. One some of the social media sites it sort of makes sense since that sort of stuff is virtually endless but quit with the auto refresh shit so you lose your place in the middle of reading a post. The real annoying use of this that comes to mind are two types of sites.
This evening was once again a time when we’re walking through a parking lot when someone just started backing out of their spot directly at us and never even slowed down. I’m willing to bet they never even looked and didn’t even know we were there. I can’t even count how many times I’ve seen this happen. Hell I almost had someone back into me when I was directly behind their car.
Surely I’ve bitched about the annoying fucking sign up for our mailing list popups on every site these days before but I’ve been noticing them using animation and wobbling and useless shit like that lately. The simple fact is that you’re not getting my email address unless I do business with you and you need a way to communicate delivery or order status or something. The only thing these fancy begging popups do is annoy me enough that I will most likely go elsewhere for what I am looking for.
I just saw something about Mount Joy being the second fastest growing towns in Pennsylvania. They’re playing it up like it is a good thing which it is not. It’s nothing more than greed and shortsightedness to praise things that are unsustainable. That’s a lesson that should have been learned from other places but those who control the development don’t care. They’ll cash out and be long gone by the time the problems come up.
One thing that is hard to find if not impossible to find up here is a legit cheese steak. The one local pizza place had some decent enough ones. They always smelled like a legit pizza place too. When you walk in you could smell the heaven of what a legit pizza place should smell like. Sadly the owner sold it and while it’s still decent it’s been slowly declining
I saw an interesting article today comparing dark mode to light mode. It surprisingly to me mentioned users with visual impairments. I’m one of them and it verified at least what works for me. I have cloudy corneas causing me to be legally blind. Growing up using a CCTV to enlarge things really helped me read stuff. The contrast made a difference. Reverse contrast always was easier for me to see and read faster and maybe at a slightly smaller size.
Sometimes You meet someone and they say nice things that just stick with you. I have a couple teachers that are that way. It started in 2013 Very shortly after we began doing Crossfit another local gym was doing Grace as a fundraiser for one of their members who had cancer or something. That was Crossfit Gamma owned by Mike Jenkins the strong man. Well I did grace with Only 95 pounds and shit form.
I always appreciate the brighter colorful things in life. That really comes from back when I had my last cornea transplant and everything was not only clearer but so much brighter and more vibrant. I guess the cloudy cornea blocks more light than you’d think and you don’t know what your missing if you can’t see it. Ever since then I’d have to stop and look and enjoy every sunrise or sunset if I was able to.
I’m gifted with the ability to tune out commercials 99% of the time. Even if I do not tune it out I don’t remember the product. The one thing that I always, always notice is drug commercials. You know the ones. The depression ones that play happy music and have one line about how it’s the greatest thing ever then the entire rest of the commercial is spent listing side effects.
Ever since I was a baby.. or at least a toddler and could eat that sort of thing loved potato chips with cream cheese. The first time Molly tried it she didn’t really like like it. She likes chips with that dip bullshit. That’s when I learned chips with cream cheese is apparently a Philly thing? I’ve tried chips with the dip and I didn’t care for it myself, maybe it’s because the flavor didn’t meet my expectations.
We had an Atari 2600 when we were growing up that my aunt who moved to California bought for us for Christmas (I think) one year. I would guess 1983 or so but I can’t remember exactly when. That is certainly one of the earliest things that got me into trying to understand how computers worked. Before that computers were just something I saw on TV. I wanted to know how that little box does these things.
Every once in a while I see a post or something that reminds me of old school ECW when it was still based in Philly. I had only discovered it by accident one evening in the mid 1990s I was looking for something to watch and came across this thing on TV called Extreme Championship Wrestling on the old sports channel. It looked interesting so I watched it. There was blood and weapons and didn’t look as blatantly fake as stuff I saw as a kid.
We keep having a black cat that has litters of babies under the neighbors' porch at least once a year. You see the damn cat stalking prey almost every day. I’ve never actually seen it catch anything but obviously it’s getting food somehow since its been out here several years now. This year all 4 of her kittens were run over by cars. It really would be nice if cat owners had to take the same responsibilities as dog owners.
Yesterday’s post really made me remember how much fun we’d have climbing trees as kids. I think it was a daily occurrence during the summer when we had off school. I remember climbing trees all the time when I was in elementary school. We’d see who could climb the highest. Pine trees were the easiest to climb. Looking out of the top was always fun! We also had very tall trees we could climb if you could get up to the first branches.
Sitting here reading something online I’m hearing the kids out side playing basketball where the neighbors have a basketball net up. Kids spend entirely too much time staring at a screen or playing video games. When we were growing up we were outside from morning until the street lights came on and supper time. We had to be in the house for supper and everyone stayed at the table to everyone was done eating.
Quite a while ago we cut cable back to the most basic plan they had since the prices kept increasing with nothing of value added while they were giving discounts to new customers and everyone that asked except us. We also didn’t like the idea of contracts. Eventually they encrypted then wanted to charge for the basic over the air channels so we returned those converters and tried an antenna. We weren’t watching that much TV at that time and what we wanted was mostly streamed.
One in a while something comes up that reminds me how I am no longer able to be an organ donor or blood donor. Considering I have received donor corneas as soon as I was able to add organ donor to my ID I did so that should something happened to me my no longer needed organs could potentially help someone or give someone else a second chance at life.
Fed-ex is easily the worst shipping company I’ve had anything delivered by. I think the algorithm they use to predict delivery day is “Hey let’s pull a random date out of my ass!” I used to avoid if I could ordering stuff from Newegg because that’s who they used to ship back then.
I make it no big secret that I tend to enjoy older video games a bit more than newer ones. To me they tended to be a little more fun to play. They were less focused on graphics than current ones but that’s because the technology wasn’t there back then. Visually the less realistic graphics tended to be better for my eyes. There was better contrast but I am in the small minority there.
Anyone who knows me knows that I ran out of fucks to give a long time about when it comes to what anyone thinks of me. I mean in the grand scheme of thing what difference does it make? Life is short as it is and to many people run around being miserable worrying about what anyone else thinks of them. It’s been something I’ve been planning on doing for a while.
We went to Dimaria’s Pizza for their tomato pie today. Not the original owners since They’ve moved to the Ephreta area but it’s not bad. Just not Great like it was when they still owned it. It got me thinking though. That shopping center where it’s located is pretty new. Maybe 10ish years old. Used to be a few small businesses (I miss Twin Kiss!!) and farms behind and around it.
With the whole shit show of the male romper thing me being the I really don’t give a fuck kind of person thought it might be funny to buy one. What makes it even better is how so many people act like a piece of clothing is the worst possible thing in the world. They were way too expensive or from China so I didn’t. Besides that I didn’t see anything outlandish enough to fit my taste haha.
It’s been a while since the United States has had a total solar eclipse. I want to think their was one when I was in elementary school but I can’t be sure if that was a total eclipse or not. I just remember us going outside and it getting darker. This one was the first I could understand and enjoy though. It wasn’t total here, we only had a partial eclipse.
The other day we went roller skating with the grand kids at the Mount Gretna Roller rink. I didn’t fall, die or break anything and it’s the first time I’ve been on roller skates since I was in elementary school. It would seem that roller skating is sort of like riding a bike, it’s just one of those things you don’t forget how to do once you learn it. Sure it was a little awkward at first but after a few minutes I was doing it like it hasn’t been 30 years since the last time I was on skates.
I don’t get how people can push pyramid scheme types of things.. An acquaintance on Facebook seems to always be either pushing or bragging about how much money they make from pushing isagenix. It’s purely manipulating and taking advantage of people. I think the “detox” crap is what annoys me the most. When will people just get that to loose weight you just have to put the fork down.
Last year I began doing Crossfit to see how that worked out for me since I have always enjoyed exercise, especially lifting. I did not know how it would work out for me due to my vision problems but I am fortunate enough to have coaches that have been patient with teaching me stuff and have good at communicating what I was doing wrong at different times. I can pretty much do anything that we do in the WODS but a few movements give me issues.
I have to laugh at the Christians who believe Christmas is being taken away from them. Rather than being concerned about the war on Christmas why not celebrate it for what you believe it is about, the birth of Jesus, your savior. Christians ought to be much more concerned about the commercialization of the holiday than us evil atheist taking it away from you.
Several days ago I saw someone say about a school no longer teaching cursive. I personally think this is great! That style of writing is nearly impossible for me to read. I would guess it is because the letters all blend together and are not very distinct. I loathed being forced to write in it for certain classes when I was in school as I could not proof read it since I couldn’t read it.
I could eat some Senapes Pitza from Hazleton, PA. Nothing beats eating that stuff straight from the box. The crust is soft and stays pretty soft even if you let it sit out overnight. My mouth is salivating for some of that stuff. I really wish I could pick some of it up here. Hope we can do a geocaching and Senapes Pitza road trip this spring
Zynga’s Mafia wars on Facebook is one of those things where I have to keep thinking to my self Why didn’t I come up with that idea. While it seems to be dying off now a lot of people have spent a lot of money on that game. If Zynga didn’t do such a terrible job at mishandling it I really truly believe many people would still be playing and spending a ton of cash on it.
What happened to Slashdot? At one time it was the first site I visited in the morning. Now I just visit it once in a while since it has become so slow and bloated. They used to have interesting news and even more interesting comments. Now all they show is old stories with the same old memes.
It seems that not a day goes by where I see another letter in the news paper saying that the United states needs to get back to God or it’s Christian roots. Frankly it’s disturbing how many people here in Pennsyltucky feel that their beliefs are the only ones that matter. No one says that everyone has to agree with others' beliefs but it certainly won’t kill anyone to accept them and maybe learn from their differences.
Black Friday is a bunch of people being herded into stores thinking they’re getting good deals which some do get good deals but in the end it’s all wasting time waiting to buy crap that they mostly likely will not use next your or will be broken anyways since everything is just so cheaply made these days.
Being Visually impaired has always effected my ability to read but it seems that since my cornea transplant went bad I have had difficulty even reading large print. I’ve tried reading stuff on the computer screen but that’s not very comfortable to read for that way for long periods of time. Another problem is that large print books are just so expensive and audio books are worse yet. Molly bought me a Kindle for my birthday and that has been a real blessing.
Something that I have always really wanted to do do was fly. I always wanted to ride in an airplane and to this day haven’t I also wanted to ride in a hot air balloon and that hasn’t happened yet. I had never thought about riding in a helicopter, I don’t know why but that thought just never occurred to me. Until Today I never thought of riding in a helicopter.
It has been sort of a hectic few months. Multiple endocrine neoplasia 2a runs in my family and I knew that but never knew what to get tested for. Mom wanted me to go to her doctor but that’s two hours away and really wasn’t an option. Last year one of my brothers had the cancer so I thought I should get the genetic test. I haven’t been to any kind of doctor in 12 years and this was basically the only reason I went.
Comcast’s email service really really sucks. Some legit emails about transferring a domain have taken over a week to arrive in my email box and when they finally did arrive they showed up in the spam folder which I had to practically jump through hoops to find. As a test I’ve sent some emails to myself and they have yet to arrive and it’s been about a week. Nothing about them being rejected either.
Something I find sad and depressing at the same time is the sheer amount of useless contraptions and fad diets out there that people use to lose weight. The common words in the ads for such thing are “six pack”, toned, ripped. Really People all it takes is a little hard work and you can do it too! It will take more than 2 minutes a day and no you can’t eat big sized happy meals every day but if you just do the work and eat better you’ll end up healthier and happier.
One thing I find interesting about Christians is how they are so quick to get up in arms over attacks on Jesus or religion or worst yet is when they get all bent out of shape about myths of taking “Christ” out of Christmas. I understand they have their beliefs and they should stand up for what they believe in but its is odd how they don’t care about the blatant commercialization of Christmas.
So our local newspaper has decided that they want me to pay a few dollars to read more than 15 articles online. To me this would be fine if I didn’t already pay to have it delivered. Why should I have to pay extra to read it online on a page loaded with ads? I don’t read the print version myself because of the small print not working with my eyesight.
I really loathe when stores have their cashiers ask if I would like to donate a dollar to such and such charity. The answer will remain no mainly because I am not able to at this time. The other reason the answer will always be no is because if I had the means and wanted to donate to a a charity I would have already done so.
It seems to be far too common for websites to have a pop up begging for my email address these days. If I come to a website that has a pop up begging for my email address that covers the actual content I am trying to read I leave the site immediately and do my best to never return again.
Google says they are cracking down on spam. That would be nice as their results have not been very good recently. Almost every search has crappy results from the same sites such as ehow and yahoo answers. There’s also the useless sites that want you to jump through hoops to get the answers to your questions and of course the answers are stolen. Google says they’re doing something about it but we’ll see.
A few minutes ago I looked up a local pizza shop’s website to see if they deliver. What a train wreck that site is! First things first it’s flash only. Their is a little animation.. Basically the shops name moves up on the screen then a graphic shows up. I only turned flash on to see how poorly done the site was. The text is small and it’s only got a menu for the types of food.
I hear people say they can’t do something far too often. This reminds me of a teacher in middle school who used to say there’s no such thing as can’t. It’s either you don’t know how to do something or you don’t want to do something. This has always stuck with me and for most things I believe it is true. I think most of the time is people don’t want to do something.
Firefox 4 beta 9 was released and I had to try it. It’s not in FreeBSD ports yet so I tried it under wine.. I tried it and it seems to be much, much faster than 3.6.x The speed improvement is very nice and long over due.. but the GUI? Why in the world would they get rid of the status bar? I depend on that to see where a link may be leading me to.
Dear fundamentalist Christians, please accept others for what they are and don’t waste your time praying for me to become a believer. I don’t judge you no matter how illogical your fairy tales are, please give me the same.
Here’s a message to those websites who think they are disabling right clicking to prevent someone from stealing your photos. You are not preventing anything but you are hurting usability for those of us who may want to open a link in a new tab or a new window. I know I could just middle click but I choose to right click and use the menu. This may be hard for you to understand but your images and page were transferred from your server to my computer.
I’ve been noticing recently some websites want my email address. This is nothing new but the trend seems to be a box popping up over the content I was looking for. It dims and disables the rest of the page. Note to the sites that use this. I find this intrusive and will immediately leave your site. I realize most sites are trying to make money but don’t be so fucking intrusive with it.
So last night while waiting for Molly to get home from work I turned on the TV and started listening to the local news. I luckily tuned in just in time to hear that one celebrity got out of rehab and another celebrity went into rehab. I hope someone will someday be able to enlighten me enough that I can understand why this is considered news or why anyone really cares.
Why is it that so many Christians feel the need to try to twist everything into something Christian? Can they not just enjoy something without having to somehow trying to relate being Christian? My opinion on religion in general is it’s just a silly fairy tale that is used to control the masses.
Google, can you please give me a way to get rid of the stupid and pointless previews for half of the sites that appear as an image on the right side of the page when my mouse hovers over the link. I find them very distracting and also a waste of bandwidth. They are there sometimes and other times they are not. What ever happened to having things simple. That and the good search results are what originally got me to begin using your search engine.
I hate spam. I hate the fact that I have to waste my time going through my email to look for an important message sifting through what is ninety percent spam. Email is basically useless with such a high signal to noise ratio. Could you imagine if your regular phone worked like email does? It would be constantly ringing to try to trick you into buying Viagra. Close behind that would be people trying to sell you the next new way to lose weight.
So the Eagles lost.. I’ve been waiting for this.
One thing I would love to do is come up with a way to legitimately make some money online. Then I would not feel so guilty even though the reason I am not out is because transportation is the issue. I would like to come up with something that is honest and does not involve lying or scamming people. That rules out something like 90% of the possibilities there doesn’t it?
Zynga’s mafia wars team are people I will never understand. They blatantly ignore the players' requests and go ahead and add more crap into the game trying to make it more than a click game while they have many players who have shown they’re more than willing to spend tens of thousands of dollars in cash. It’s interesting how they continue to drive people away or at least cause them to stop spending.
I hate them. Why do people use them? I want to know what site I’m going to before I decide if I want to visit it.
The bible is the world’s most popular and dangerous work of fiction. That is all.
This is something I’ve been wondering for quite a while and will never understand it. How do people manage to keep a job when they cannot seem to make something function? Take Facebook for an example. It seems like every day some of my friends' profiles are not available. Even better is when you try to log into your own account it won’t let you. That’s been going on for at least a year now.
We’ve turned the corner heading back towards winter now. I’m noticing the sun is lower in the sky and it’s been cooler the past week or so and much less humid than it had been. Most nights we’re making it into the 50’s. We haven’t had much rain this summer in my backyard but a few miles in every direction has had their share of rain from thunderstorms. A strong cold front will move through today but we’re not likely to have any rain from it because there’s just not much moisture for it to work with.
Garmin’s customer support rocks. My 60csx was 2 years old and for no reason wouldn’t acquire satellites. We were on our way to Philly to visit my family when this happened and it was during vacation so it cut down on our geocaching but this stuff happens. On our way down the turnpike I thought many times of throwing the GPS out the window but didn’t I left it sit at the window all night and still had a blank satellite screen in the morning.
It’s not something that happens all too often but an earthquake occurred in Illinois this morning. Of course my first thought was whether it was on the new Madrid fault but it wasn’t. It registered 5.2 on the Richter scale and doesn’t seem to have caused any major damage. It looks like there have been four aftershocks. one has to wonder how many of the people that live there are aware of the New Madrid fault
I got woken up last night by howling winds and the heaviest downpour since last summer. My Vantage pro2 said 2.06 inches an hour for rainfall rates.. It also said it’s raining cats and dogs, well no shit! Sounds like there is a little minor flooding out there now. I got up and looked at the radar.. What an impressive squall line it showed. Haven’t seen one like that cross this area in a while.
What the hell is it with people when they’re driving? We were on our way home today and there were two people that seemed to be racing down the road including driving in the wrong lane and the left hand turning lane today. Why does driving seem to bring out the asshole in people? This is how folks get hurt or killed. Sadly its often innocent people who are the ones who get hurt.
I just came across a pretty cool new feature on wunderground. It’s called wundermap and it overlays weather station information on a map or satellite image. It would be pretty interesting to watch a strong cold front on here or something like that. It also has the ability to overlay radar images. which I haven’t tried yet. Check it out! WunderMap Interactive Radar & Weather Stations
I wonder how much energy could be saved everyone would turn off lights at night. It’s interesting to see how many outside lights are left on all night. It just seems very wasteful to me. One neighbor has a light bright enough to light up our back yard and they live something like three houses down. Another neighbor behind us leaves more than one light on every night. One lights the side of their house.
Peanut butter disproves evolution I am glad I came across this. I’ve been struggling whether to believe in evolution or not. Now I know it’s just a fairy tale and can prove it to myself by just going to the store and buying peanut butter.
We attended a geocaching event held by Phideo over the weekend that was held at a place we’d never been to before. It was just one of those times when geocaching brings us to a great place we’d never been to before. It was held at Strawberry Hill Nature Center & Preserve. It was really a nice place and I was thankful they allowed us to geocache there. We are lucky enough to have to return for more caches too!
Mystery illness strikes after meteorite hits Peruvian village This was pretty interesting I thought. In a rural area of Peru a meteor or at least it sounds like a meteor fell from the sky and left a 100 foot wide and 20 foot deep crater. The crater emitted a gas that made people sick. I’m curious what happened there and hope scientist get to figure it out.
Recently I have been seeing Adblock plus brought up pretty often. Adblock plus is an extension for Firefox that blocks web ads. I have the right to block ads and I do that but I think the site owner has the right to block me from using their site. I’d just go somewhere else. I find it interesting that they would want to limit their exposure just because someone is blocking ads.
Dangerous Hurricane Felix is about to make landfall in northeastern Nicaragua. After weakening some on Monday it’s strengthened over night and still is now. It is back up to category 5 levels again with 160 mile per hour winds. It doesn’t seem like the area is very populated so that’s a good thing. This is the second hurricane in the Atlantic basin to make landfall as a category five storm this year.
Molly had jury duty earlier this week in Philadelphia,pa. This is the third time she’s been called but the first time she actually had to go. We were going to get a hotel in center city but in the end we stayed at my mom’s house just outside Philly. That worked out good because I could visit with my family and she could catch the train and not have to sit in traffic.
I read last night about them doing something with stem cells that would help people with cornea problems see better again. The article said it was helpful for people who have had failed cornea transplants. I wonder if it would work for me. It’s something I would actually consider. This was just awesome news to me. When the last cornea transplant didn’t work out so well I decided I didn’t want another transplant I thought it was better to give someone else a chance to have that cornea because it has a better chance of being successful for them than it would me.
I have a Nintendo Wii which I love to play but just don’t use it that often. Being visually impaired I have to sit up close to the TV to play and it’s pretty uncomfortable. Still it’s lots of fun. I just had the urge to play Zelda. I don’t get to play as often as I’d like. Last Sunday we were home from geocaching and Molly wasn’t watching TV so I thought I’d play for a bit.
Guinea pigs make great pets. They’re easy to take care of and don’t need a lot but they have different personalities. We have four of them. Sometimes they have the strangest behaviors. I got a couple of pictures last week and Molly finally got them off of her camera so here they are. Once in a while they make a rumbling sound and chase each other around. I’m not sure if it is sexual or if it’s a dominance thing but they try to mount each other.
With it being warmer Our four guinea pigs have been laying around more outside of their igloos except for peppy. Anyways here’s how Teddy lays on her side. She lays that way often and sometimes we are worried she’s dead because she doesn’t wake up very quickly. The other ones we have lay on their sides but not very often. Teddy is almost always sleeping this way.
Did you ever lose touch with a friend and wish you didn’t? I always considered the vision teacher I had through out most of school a real friend but when I graduated I lost touch with her even though I had her phone number. I’m not sure why. My best guess I was pretty depressed at the time. Well anyways she was just one of those great people. She was a positive influence on me.
Mysterious Clouds Creeping Out of the Arctic This was interesting. It talks about Noctilucent clouds being seen further south than they normally are. Yet another very cool thing up in the arctic that I want to see. I only first read about these 50 mile high clouds this week. The article mentioned the climate changing but it was nice for a change because they didn’t go on with the doomsday global warming stuff.
With the news lately it leaves me to wonder why in the world are celebrities so important in the United States. This crap is important enough that some rich person who has done nothing goes to jail and it’s national news. I never understood the obsession with Paris Hilton. I mean why does anyone really care? Why does anyone care who went into rehab. I know people who needed rehab and couldn’t get it but celebrities can come and go as they please.
Molly was watching TV in bed last night while I was on the computer not really paying a whole lot of attention to it until I heard them say central Pa. It was a show about the Gosselin family who had sextuplets. I had to Google it to see if it was the family I remembered being in the news a few years ago and it was. I remembered them mentioning some sort of fertility treatment for her.
Pa. smoking ban I’m not sure I really agree with the government banning smoking in public places. I can’t stand the smell of cigarettes smoke myself and would prefer to not be around the smoke. I just don’t think it’s quite right for them to pass a law to make public places like bars smoke free. That should be up to the owner. Of course I’m all for the government banning smoking in government owned places.
Today was the summer solstice. Today the sun reached it’s highest point in the northern hemisphere and will begin sinking back to the south. The days will start getting shorter and in a month or two the average temperature will begin to fall. We’ll begin that slow slide until it’s that time of the year for snow possibilities again. I can’t wait!
Just something that’s been bothering me a bit. We live in a row house. A cheap one but it’s what we chose. The neighbors on both sides smoke out on their porches. The smoke comes in our house. Sometimes to the point that my eyes burn. It’s a pain in the ass, especially considering no one in our house smokes. Talking to either neighbor about it would do no good. The idiots who live on one side of our house have no clue what respect means.
We went to the Hazleton area caching and had a blast. I think we found 25 caches and had 3 DNFs. Blew off some the hiking ones to save for another day but I do want to do them. It was nice to go through some areas I’ve been to but not in about 10 years. We got two boxes of the Senapes Pitza and ate one almost immediately. I finished the other one the next day.
I used to get this pizza all the time when I went to the mountains with my grandfather. It was the Hazleton area. I’ve been wanting to find it again and knew it was only local to that area but couldn’t remember what it was called. Last Saturday we were geocaching in the Reading area and stopped by Sonic to eat and started talking to someone from Allentown. I had to ask if they knew what it was called and they did.
I was going through channels and came across the weather channel. I didn’t think this channel could get any worse than it was but it did. I know that most people are not interested in the details of weather like I am but how can they call them selves the weather channel when about the only thing the have on that has anything to do with weather is the local forecast which is pretty shitty as it is.
Wood chips ruled unfriendly to disabled kids A judge in California ruled that using wood chips around playground equipment violates disabled children’s rights. The article says that this could force them to have to use a different type of playground surface. I’m all for accessibility but I think this is unreasonable that the play structures be accessible to them. I just can’t imagine how someone in a wheel chair is really going to use it.
The other day the guy that owns the house a couple down from ours told Molly about him and his dad visiting a ghost town in western PA. It reminded me of a few things. The first thing I thought of was a couple of years ago when Lynn and I were geocaching in NW PA we visited a virtual cache that had to do with Pithole City. We didn’t get to explore the area because it was getting dark and we had like a six hour ride back home.
We stopped by Long’s park Saturday and ate supper at one of the picnic tables. After we ate we walked around the pond to see if there were any baby geese or ducks. I knew they got rid of most of them and stopped people from feeding them but we figured we’d look anyway. No babies around. They got rid of them because of them shitting on the ground. What was amazing is how much more trash there is laying around the park.
My Nan came up to visit last weekend and she brought some old report cards of mine that she had found in her house. They were from elementary school. That was when I still liked school. That whole thing reminded me of the time when I stopped liking school. It changed in sixth grade. I didn’t realize my good eye had gotten worse but the doctor said I should have another cornea transplant so I put my name on the waiting list.
Last Saturday Lynn called us and asked if we wanted to go caching with her. We decided to go. We went up along 61 in the mountains of Central Pa. We’d love to get up there more but Molly’s car opposes hills let alone the steeper stuff up there. It was a fun day with a few snow squalls. Pretty cool for being early April! We ended up near Centralia so we stopped in to see the cracked road.
I’ve been using Vonage since December 2002 and have been happy with it. I’ve never had a problem with it. This was the perfect solution for me because I could have a phone number for the Philly area where my family lives so they could call me local and it was cheap for me. I’m worried I’ll have to look for another option soon. Verizon claims that Vonage uses their patented ideas.
I saw this today and thought it was pretty unusual. I can’t remember ever hearing of two people being killed at the same spot at separate times before. It happened in Rhode Island The first teen supposedly had been drinking then took his mom’s mini van and left. He was only 14. Its pretty bad he was that young and drinking and managed to take his mom’s car but that’s not really important.
I’ve always wanted to switch to Linux but in the past it just hasn’t worked for me. I’d installed Linux twice before but it just didn’t stick for me. Last time I had installed it my hard drive started giving smart errors and then started loosing windows files randomly. We sent that drive back to get it replaced but in the mean time we bought a smaller cheaper drive to put in my computer until the 180 gig one came back.
There will be a total lunar eclipse tomorrow I am hoping to get the chance to actually see it this time but it looks like it may be cloudy. That’s typical for me and this type of thing. Another example was the good chance to see the aurora borealis a month or two ago. For us it got cloudy but the clouds were only in the part of the sky where the northern lights were to be visible.
Person on their cell phone on top of their flooded car. They showed them on the noon news. Apparently both heavy rains and cell phones bring out the stupid in people. If they hadn’t gone around the barrier to drive into the water it wouldn’t have been a problem.
I heard on the local news last night that an 18 year old got shot but his grandfather for breaking into his house. Pretty low to try to steal alcohol from grandpa.
I guess the ice will be melting today. As of 11:00 AM it’s already in the low 40’s, Yesterday it got up to near 50 degrees. It feels like spring and the sky looks like spring. It’s a pretty big change compared to what we’ve had so far this month. The warmth is working on the snow on the ground pretty quickly The piles of snow are really holding their own.
Teen ‘sport killings' of homeless on the rise It supposedly started off as a game. The started throwing sticks and leaves at a homeless man after having a couple of beers with him. Then they started punching and kicking the homeless man. They also threw rocks and bricks at him and pounded him with a pipe and baseball bat. After that one of them smeared his own shit on the man’s face and cut him with a knife to see if he’s dead…
We decided to check out the ice on the river today. It was really cool on the York county side of the river. There seemed to be lots of pressure pushing the ice against the western banks. We could hear the ice squeaking and cracking as the water tried to push it. There was also plenty of broken pieces of ice on top and pushed up along the bank. There were also a few louder cracks out further.
This is something I haven’t seen in quite a while. A website that only works in Internet Explorer. Of course it’s a big company’s website and rather than fix the problem they make it show an error page saying that it only supports Internet Explorer 6 or higher. I wonder why they don’t care about lost customers. I wish it was as easy as just telling customer’s to change their browser.
It’s been below freezing for a few days now. Actually it’s been getting into the single digits at night and teens in the day. We’ll be keeping an eye on the river for a while. Below will be a few pictures from today.
Ozzfest will be free this year according to what I read. I still wouldn’t go to see Ozzy anymore. I would have loved to have seen him about 10 years ago. Besides it would just be giving Sharon more money. Hopefully the fact that it’s free is a sign that the whole Ozzfest thing is failing and dying. . I’m sure they’ll have more mall core shit that will suck more than anything has sucked in the past.
There’s finally arctic air in place and it’s been plenty cold but of course there’s no snow. I was hoping we’d have a chance to hit zero but didn’t quite get low enough. had a low of around six last night and Sunday night. At least the cold has been refreshing. A new cache popped up around Cornwall so we got to go for a nice short hike. There was a inch or two of snow on the ground there too.
These days, any package can raise alarm This is unusual. A cache was discovered there was no overreaction. They even put the cache back in its hiding spot and probably did a better job at it than some cachers do. Over all I think it was a pretty positive article considering some of the others out there.
We took part in an adopt a highway today for the York county geocaching society. Makes me wonder why we even have to to this.. I mean why do people need to just throw trash along the side of the road. We found a propane tank and a pretty big truck tire among other things one doesn’t just fall out with out you noticing. There were some other bigger things but I don’t remember what they are.
Sex Crazy? A church in North Carolina has that on a sign for some series they’ll have to deal with sex in today’s culture. This isn’t something you see too often.
Man With Mannequin Fetish Sent to Prison I just came across this. I had to say post it.. It’s funny but kind of pathetic in a way that someone would have a sexual fetish for mannequins. Even worse is when he breaks into stores and steals them.
Barbaro the Kentucky Derby winning horse died today. It was breaking news.. I like animals but why was a horse dying so important? I assumed he was going to die sooner or later? Why was it even important enough to be newsworthy all this time? I am just surprised that he became such big news when there’s so many other more important things going on.
I’ve been reading about the new Delorme PN-20 GPS. It looks pretty interesting. It comes with Delorme’s USA Topo 6.0. The GPS can show aerial photos too. Just seems real interesting to me. The couple of reviews I’ve read on it say it isn’t perfect but at least they’re adding something a bit different. I hope this becomes the norm by the time I need a new GPS.
Saw on the news last night that thieves stole copper pipes from a vacant house. They took water and gas lines from the basement. What grabbed my attention is the fact that neighbors smelled the gas from the leak. I’m hoping the people who stole the pipes are working on becoming a Darwin award winner.
Molly wanted disc 4 of season 24 last night so she could finish watching it. She didn’t realize she saw it before and thought Netflix had skipped sending that one for some reason. Well she wanted it now so she stopped at Blockbuster on the way home. I think she paid $4.50 to rent it. I thought that seemed like a lot. I guess I’m just used to paying only $19 something for Netflix to have 3 moves at a time for as long as I want.
There was an article the other day saying that if you microwave a sponge for two minutes it kills the germs on it. Apparently some people who tried it didn’t realize that if the sponge isn’t wet it can catch fire and stink up their house.. The university that said you could sterilize the sponge in the microwave released a statement saying the sponge should be wet first. Maybe everyone shouldn’t be expected to realize this but what really stood out is this “Last, people should be careful when removing the sponge from the microwave as it will be hot.
I keep getting these offers in the mail for lower auto insurance rates. I find it pretty funny because I don’t drive and most likely never will. I have this small problem of not being able to see too far so driving wouldn’t be a good idea. This prevents me from getting a license in the state of Pennsylvania. I’ve received something from them 3 times in the past 3 months or so.
Wow..in Brazil a women shot six times in the head lived when her ex husband shot her.. I think it’s pretty amazing that she lived. I just wonder how all six bullets could avoid going into her brain and killing her. I wonder what her ex husband thinks knowing that she lived. If I were him the one thing going through my head is I wouldn’t want to piss her off.
It’s usually not a good idea to launch fireworks from your ass like this guy did. Part of me thinks it’s funny when stupid people pay for their stupidity. Another part of me thinks that this is really not good. When people aren’t capable of thinking things through enough to realize fire near their ass is probably a bad idea and do something like this it scares me knowing that we live in a world full of them.
I just thought it was a bit interesting when I read about this. A woman died in Kentucky after being bit by a snake at a church. Apparently at her church they handle snakes which is illegal in Kentucky.
The website for Burger King (bk.com) has to be the worst site I’ve come across in a long time in terms of usability. I have to wonder why they built it completely out of flash, unless there’s something I missed. Molly thought it was a pain to use her self and her vision is fine. She was trying to find nutritional information. I asked her to see if she could find a text only version but she didn’t see any info about one either.
According to teen points BB gun at wrong car a teenager thought it was fun to be pointing his BB gun at cars to scare people. I have to wonder if he shit his pants when two people inside pulled their real guns. It would’ve been funny to see his reaction to that and when he found out they were undercover police. Maybe next time he’ll think twice before doing something so stupid to try to be scare people.
It looks like they will in this thing. I’d like to have one to try to blend stuff. See it at will it blend?
I’ve been seeing sites that use CAPTCHAs that are a series of letters or numbers in an image to log into a site or do other things online. Being visually impaired these make it harder for me to do what I’m trying to do. There have been a few that even enlarging the image didn’t help me be able to read it. Some of them have such poor contrast or are so distorted there’s no way I could read it.
A federal jury in Philadelphia awarded $24 million million to two people who were burned by electric wires when the climbed on top of a parked train car. The jury said it could have been prevented if there were signs warning about the wires. I just think something’s not quite right of someone can climb on top on top of a parked train and not realize they’re doing something stupid before they get shocked.
