Feeling A Lot Better Today

After yesterday in what was essentially a clusterfuck of a day for fitness and exercise for me, today I am feeling a lot better. I slept good again and ended up with a resting heart rate of 49 today. It’s been great to have the windows open and the fan on, as opposed to the loud, annoying air conditioner on these cooler nights. That was the odd thing about yesterday. I had slept well and woke up feeling refreshed, but that didn’t matter in the end.

Today’s squats went well. As squats do 90 percent of the time for me, they felt great. If there’s one lift that comes completely natural for me, it’s squats. I did 210 pounds today, and they were very fast and explosive. Had I not rolled my ankle running yesterday, I would have done pause squats since they felt so good, but I felt it would be better not to press my luck and really test my ankle out. It felt good, but why play with fire? It’s surely no big deal. I frequently roll it when hiking. Vision problems, not seeing rocks or roots can cause that!

I am slowly but surely losing the habit of me feet wanting to turn way out. That’s just been my natural state as long as I can remember. I even remember noticing it when I was a kid. I think it’s just the way I learned to stand and walk.

The strict presses were a somewhat heavy 125 pounds for me, but I easily got through them. They were fast a solid with no slowdown and no cracking form, which I was happy with. This is the area where things tend to start to break for me. I can’t say I was disappointed with the way they went today.

Dead lifts felt fucking wonderful today, and they should have at only 245 pounds. Given the fact that they felt great, I decided to get a little extra work in and did 5 x 3 at 245 instead of singles. I didn’t use mixed grip as I want to build more grip strength. That’s a weakness of mine, for sure. I felt like I really should take advantage of the very nice weather today before it gets hot again. It’s July in the mid-Atlantic, so it’s almost guaranteed that we get at least some heat waves with very high humidity. We have the air conditioner to put in, but it was nice and relaxing to feel the nice breeze coming in the window today. That can really help me focus.

A little while later, I did the WOD. Sandbag hang power cleans and I did step overs on the box rather than the programmed jump overs. To jump over the 24 inch box I need more space to fail than I have inside the garage gym and a higher ceiling would be nice. It’s the whole risk/benefit thing. I also thought better of taking the box outside, with my ankle was not being all that thrilled with me from yesterday’s running mishap. It’s the first WOD breaking in my new Brute Force Sandbag. It’s going to take me a while to get used to not expecting it to begin leaking dust, then sand and eventually gravel out of the filler bag.

The Music choice for both the strength and the WOD was Cryptopsy’s None so Vile and Blasphemy Made Flesh. Both are excellent CDs from back in the 90s.
