Six or More inches of Snow for Mount Joy

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Another week and more snow.. This should bring the Lancaster county area their heaviest snow of the year so far with six inches plus of the white stuff.  It’ll be a wet snow compared to the very fluffy powdery stuff we’ve had for the past couple of years.  I’ll enjoy watching it fall. We’ve already recieved a half inch or so here in Mount Joy Pennsylvania from snow showers.

No bitter arctic temperatures with this storm either.  Highs should be near freezing with tonight’s low in the mid 20s. That feels outright warm compared to last week’s highs near 20 and lows in the single digits.

A Few Inches of Snow With More to the East Again

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Well it looks like we’ll get maybe 2-4 inches of snow here.  Not really something to complain about but more would be nice.  To our east and north east they may again get 6 inches or more.  We’ve had very little snowfall here this winter with plenty of wasted cold air here in Lancaster county.  Maybe next time.

Some light snow with the heavier stuff staying east again

Monday, January 10th, 2011

It is looking like we’ll be getting a couple of inches of snow here Tuesday into Wednesday.  I can’t complain about that.. It’s funny how the past couple of years the heavier snow has been to our east over towards Philly and New Jersey and to the south.  Growing up in Bensalem it seemed like there was always more snow in the northern and western suburbs of Philly while we were always close to that dreaded mix line and seemingly always received at least some sleet mixed in.  Should be a fun one to track.

another missed snow opportunity

Friday, January 7th, 2011

Woke up this morning to a coating of snow.  I’m beginning to think that’s all we’re going to get this year which is the complete opposite of last year.  We’re doomed to wasted cold air this year so far.

December was cold and dry.  Only flurries and not much rain either.  I think we may have had one or two rain days.

December 4.1 degrees below average.

Saturday, January 1st, 2011

December was a cold month and fairly dry month.  Harrisburgh ended the month with the average temperature 4.1 degrees below normal.  Pretty interesting how the blocking held up through out the month and even had a close call with a snow storm.  It will be fun to see where January goes.

Last storm of 2010

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

While we didn’t get much snow from Sunday/Monday’s Storm here in central Pennsylvania we got plenty of wind.  Sunday night starting around midnight I guess I just was hearing a constant wind, not guts like it usually is.  That continued as Jersey and New York got slammed with snow with the storm bombing off the coast.

The wind continued Monday and apparently may have blown a couple of shipping containers from a train into the river off the bridge near Harrisburg.

This sure was an interesting storm to watch after a month of basically wasted cold here.

Nice snow storm.

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

Yesterday we had a good snow storm.  Very little wind occurred with it but snowfall rates of maybe 2 or 3 inches an hour happened Friday night.  I saw it snowing heavier than I remember seeing it snow before.  By the end ot the storm we had about 20 inches of snow on the ground.  Not bad considering the storm was forecast to be better just south of us which has happened more than once this year.  Near the Mason Dixon line into Maryland have been the big winners.

This was the most snow we’ve received since the President’s day storm of 2003.  That storm had given us close to two feet also..

The nice thing is that the snow should stick around for a little while with it getting to near 30 during the day and low teens at night to refreeze the melted snow.

Now looks like maybe some lite snow Tuesday into Wednesday.  That should be fun.

more cold

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

December was a good month.. We had above average snow with the storms overdoing the original forecasts and plenty of cold air.  There is still some snow on the ground from the surprise 3-4 inches we received for New years.  Now we’re between an ocean storm off the new england  coast and high pressure over the northern plains states.

We’ll see what happens later in the week.

Finally a snow storm

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

It’s March first and looks like we might actually get some snow.  State college has us under a winter storm warning for five to eight inches of snow here.  The problem is we’ll be on the back edge of the precipiation and it’ll have a sharp cutoff.  I’ll take  the snow though.  It’s much better than anything we’ve had so far this winter.

Now my at my parents’ house in Bucks county are forcast to get eight to fourteen inches.  When I still lived there it seemed like there was always more snow north and west of Philly but Lately it seems to be more from Philly east, go figure.   It doesn’t even seem like they’ll have to be concerned with a changer to rain.

Oh well, it should be interesting to watch things unfold.

Strong warm February storm

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Yesterday a strong storm system developed and moved into the great lakes bringing with it a strong cold front.  We had highs in the 60s with Sun most of the day and that helped create a really impressive squall line moving east across Pennsylvania.  At one point it was moving east at 75 mph but it was just a bit too late for us in northwest Lancaster county.  I broke up and we barely got a shower.  Still it was impressive for February.  I’m sort of disapointed I wasn’t home to watch things develope.

Today we have a high wind warning and the winds have been pretty strong.  Once again I am wishing I had the means to setup the wind sensor for my davis vantage pro2.
