Maybe we’ll finally get some snow

Sunday, February 11th, 2007

Looks like there’s at least a potential for a snow storm Tuesday into Wednesday. We’ll see what heppens. The odd thing about it is that it seems like most of our snowstorms occur closer to the weekend not the middle of the week. At least that’s the way I remember it growing up near Philly, Are you ready for the tv hype to begin?

Unsupported Browser

Saturday, February 10th, 2007

This is something I haven’t seen in quite a while.  A website that only works in Internet Explorer.  Of course it’s a big company’s website and rather than fix the problem they make it show an error page saying that it only supports Internet Explorer 6 or higher.  I wonder why they don’t care about lost customers.  I wish it was as easy as just telling customer’s to change their browser.  I maintain my brother’s website and just found out that the CSS was broken in Internet Explorer.  I fixed it.

More ice on the Susquehanna River

Saturday, February 10th, 2007

We decided to check out the ice on the river today. It was really cool on the York county side of the river. There seemed to be lots of pressure pushing the ice against the western banks. We could hear the ice squeaking and cracking as the water tried to push it. There was also plenty of broken pieces of ice on top and pushed up along the bank. There were also a few louder cracks out further. I want to go back after it rains if there’s still ice. It seems to be frozen all the way across south of the 462 bridge.

teens get 10 years for cooking puppy in oven

Damaging computers, splattering paint on the walls and breaking glass of a newly refurbished comunity center wasn’t enough for these asses. They had to take a puppy and cook it and kill it in the oven. I hope a rabid dog chews off their balls in the future but then again even that would be too nice.

It’s been below freezing for a few days now. Actually it’s been getting into the single digits at night and teens in the day. We’ll be keeping an eye on the river for a while.

Below will be a few pictures from today.

My thoughts Garmin 60csx

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

I know it’s not exactly new anymore but I thought I’d post my thoughts on it. I picked one up last August after my old Magellan Meridian Color was wearing out. After falling on some rocks near the Appalachian trail on NJ in a down pour the screen fogged up. I figured it was time for a new one. Molly needed a GPS because her etrex legend was falling apart and I decided it would be easier if we had the same ones. When I first picked up the 60csx it felt to me like it was built well and wouldn’t break easily.

We are both very happy with the pair 60csx units we have. They get a lock pretty quick. They even get a satellite lock in the house most of the time. As a matter of fact I have 31 foot accuracy right now as I’m sitting here in the house typing this. I’ve been impressed how it’s kept a good accuracy even where my old Magellan lost sats. The Sirf Star III chip seems to have great reception It’s almost always led us right to the cache of course that depends on the hider’s coordinates.

What made me want this GPS was the screen. For me it was very readable and bright. I can use the light text on a dark background theme which is what I normally use. I can just see it better. All of the screens are easy for me to see in this setting. You can even have the map screen use this contrast. I don’t know why more gadgets don’t offer this option.

On my old Magellan I noticed quite a bit of lag while waiting for the map screen to draw or switching screens. That doesn’t seem to happen at all on the 60csx. The only lag I notice is on the altimeter screen and that is just for a second or two.

The expandable memory was very important to me and is what stopped me from really considering the 60cs for myself. That may not be where the park entrance is. With the 1GB card we are able to fit everything from City Navigator 8 and the topo software east of the Mississippi on one card.

We have both City Navigator 8 and topo maps installed on our GPS. The auto routing has been excellent. It has been perfect for us as long as we had reasonable expectations. What I mean is that it’s only going to get you as close as possible by road. The auto routing has cut down on the planning of where we’d like to cache. When I did all the routing at home nothing would go according to plans so it was just a big waste of paper.

My only problems with it are if you drop it the microSD card can become loose but if that’s all that happens when it gets dropped I’ll be happy. The other thing was the unit would reboot on the altimeter screen once in a while. That hasn’t seemed to happen since the released newer firmware.

No Charges Filed After Accidental Car Theft

Oops.. A woman accidentally stole a car in Ohio. She used her daughter’s key in a car that wasn’t hers. She must have been embarrassed.

This is something I’d do. I actually did try to get into the wrong car in a parking lot more than once. Molly’s car is black. Their are a lot of black cars out there.

OZZFEST free this year

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

Ozzfest will be free this year according to what I read. I still wouldn’t go to see Ozzy anymore. I would have loved to have seen him about 10 years ago. Besides it would just be giving Sharon more money. Hopefully the fact that it’s free is a sign that the whole ozzfest thing is failing and dying. .

I’m sure they’ll have more mallcore shit that will suck more than anything has sucked in the past. The people there will probably be even worse. The place would be full of kids who are being different by being the same unless they grew up and grew enough balls to be able to think on their own. I just don’t think I could take it.

A good thing is I haven’t heard much of the nu-metal shit lately. Maybe it’s dying off.

More wasted cold

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

There’s finally arctic air in place and it’s been plenty cold but of course there’s no snow. I was hoping we’d have a chance to hit zero but didn’t quite get low enough. had a low of around six last night and Sunday night. At least the cold has been refreshing.

A new cache popped up around Cornwall so we got to go for a nice short hike. There was a inch or two of snow on the ground there too. I enjoyed the place. There was a stream that wasn’t frozen so it stood out in contrast to the white snow and the wind was blowing over top of us since we were in a bit of a valley. It was a refreshing walk.

Geocaching in the news

Monday, February 5th, 2007

These days, any package can raise alarm

This is unusual. A cache was discovered there was no overreaction. They even put the cache back in its hiding spot and probably did a better job at it than some cachers do. Over all I think it was a pretty positive article considering some of the others out there.
